Health and Safety
Biking as a sport has many inherent dangers, the ojective of most manufacturers and cyclists is to maximise the distance, speed and extreme terrain possibilities whilst minimising the risk faced during the activity.
When cyclying the usual way in which injury can occur is from a fall off or on to (especially for us poor gents) your bike. This normally causes just scrapes and bruises but occasionally is more serious. See our First Aid section for some advice on what do in these events and what kit you might want to take with you. As far as protective clothing is concerned this is covered in the equipment section of the site.
Other injuries can occur through overuse or poor set-up of the bike, covered in the health issues. However a large amount of muscle, ligament and skeletal problems are avoided due to the way that cycling avoids the shock-loading commonly associated with other types of exercise. To minimise any risk of injury from stress or strain it helps to maintain a good level of general fitness which is covered in our training pages.
As well as covering these areas we also have information on some of the laws and access rights asociated with cycling throughout the world. Most countries have lawful requirements for what safety equipment must be worn when cycling, we are compiling a list of each and their legislation with regard to biking here. I hope the information provided on these pages will help you to have a safer and better time whilst cycling.
